Given the increasing popularity of the Miyawaki Forest Technique and its key benefits, the Government of Uttar Pradesh (GoUP) has mandated the development of Miyawaki forests by Industries, Projects, and Commercial organisations.

Willing individuals/organizations of UP will be imparted a structured training by DoEF&CC, GoUP. After successful completion of training, they will be empanelled as Miyawaki Forest Certified Professionals (MFCPs) by the Directorate of Environment,UP. These MFCPs may provide technical supportat the local level under the guidance of DFOs. The names and contact details of these MFCPs will be available on the UP Miyawaki Helpline in the UP Environment and Climate Change Knowledge Portal(UPECCKP) so that they may be contacted for technical support on honorarium basis.Honararia will be provided by the beneficiary project/industry. The terms and conditions of services of the MFCPs will be available on the Helpline.

WHY THE HELPLINE?

Various industries and projects have to develop Miyawaki Forests and some Industries are voluntarily coming forward for it. They look up to the Forest Department for Technical Support. This necessitates creation of a pool of Miyawaki Forest Certified Professionals (MFCPs) so that the technical resorurce is available locally. This initiative of the DoEF&CC will also help in developing Green Skills among individuals and organizations.

Why Aforestation?

Air pollution & Climate Change is a global crisis and high concentrations of harmful gases and particles in our atmosphere negatively affect the health of humans, animals and plants. It also causes temperatures to rise, intensifying climate change. But there’s a natural remedy: forests. Trees act as carbon sinks and the earth’s purification system by sequestering carbon, absorbing airborne chemicals and releasing oxygen. To tackle global climate change and air pollution, we need to halt deforestation and plant billions of trees.

According to a report by the International Resource Panel (IRP), a global scientific panel hosted by the United Nations Environment Program, well-planned reforestation and related land restoration activities have a cross-sectional benefit. Planting trees helps all 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

Goal #15: Life on Land

Reforestation and conservation are essential to building a better, more sustainable future where poverty is reduced, food and water are available, biodiversity is safeguarded, and sustainable livelihoods are possible. Healthy forests = happy people!

Miyawaki Forests

Miyawaki method is a panacea for urban woes. The method advocates the planting of diverse native species, thereby bringing in more biodiversity in comparison to monoclonal plantations. These forests are created by planting of native species of trees, shrubs, herbs, grasses etc. in the same proportion as they are found in the native forests on artificially prepared climax forest soil so that the natural forest replica is developed in minimum time.

Why Miyawaki Forests

1. These forests have thirty times more trees than other plantations and are perfect for cities, where land is scarce.
2. Can be grown in very small spaces as less as 160 square metres. Can be grown very easily in densely populated urban settings.
3. They help lower temperatures in concrete heat islands, reduce air and noise pollution, attract local birds and insects, and create carbon sinks.
4. The Miyawaki Forests are found to have up to 30 times better noise and dust reduction along with 30 times better Carbon-dioxide absorption as compared to a monoculture plantation.
5. These forests are completely maintenance-free, chemical and chemical fertilizer free, wild and native forest that grows in two to three years and become self-sustaining.

Uttar Pradesh Intervention

1. Government of Uttar Pradesh (GoUP) is promoting Miyawaki Forestation Technique as it is most suitable for achieving the State’s target with respect to NDC India for carbon sequestration in view of limited availability of land for aforestation.
2. Ideally suited as nature based solution for mitigation of air pollution in heavily populated and congested cities of UP
3. Ideal technique for carbon offsetting by the industrial units even though limited land is available in industrial premises.
4. Government of Uttar Pradesh has developed Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for development of Miyawaki Forests.
5. Several Miyawaki Forests have been developed across the State as demonstration sites.
6. GoUP has made development of Miyawaki Forest in industrial units mandatory.

Need for Miyawaki Helpline

The Miyawaki Forest Technique is increasingly becoming popular in the State of Uttar Pradesh. Many organizations, Institutions including Educational Institutions, RWAs, Industrial Units, Urban Local Bodies etc are coming forward for development of Miyawaki Forest. In view of this demand creation the availability of trained Miyawaki Professionals locally is turning out to be a serious bottleneck for proliferation of Miyawaki Forests in the State.

Miyawaki Helpline

Miyawaki Helpline aims at developing a team of Miyawaki Professionals at district level. The willing individuals/organizations will be imparted a structured training by DoEF&CC GoUP. After successful completion of training they will be empanelled as Miyawaki Forest Certified Professionals (MFCPs) by the directorate of Environment who may provide technical support locally on honorarium basis for development of Miawaki Forests. The names and contact details of such Certified Miyawaki Professionals will be available in the Miyawaki Helpline in the UP Environment and Climate Change Knowledge Portal (UPECCKP) so that they may be contacted easily for technical support. The honorarium and terms and conditions of services of the CMPs will be available in the Helpline. Honorarium and Local Conveyance Charges as allowed shall be directly paid to the CMPs by the service seeking individual/organizations. This initiative of the DoEF&CC will also help in developing Green Skills among the individuals and organizations.

Certification of Miyawaki Professionals

A training programme will be organized by Directorate of Environment GoUP for Certification of Miyawaki Forest Professionals for District-Level Miyawaki Helpline in UP. Details and schedule of training programme are stated below.

1. Mode: Hybrid (a mix of virtual and on-ground field-visit based hands-on training)
2. Duration : 4 Days
3. Dates: 10th January 2022 to 13th January 2022
